Eyre Peninsula
Pt Lincoln & Coffin Bay
We hit the Eyre Peninsula at Pt Augusta on a day of 41 but it had dropped to 19 at Pt Gibbon and hasn't been above 25 since.
There are a lot of wind farms in SA in an effort to stop Global Warming. It is working!!
The
east coast of the Eyre Peninsula is a bit boring. All the beaches look
much the same. Sand 'til you reach your waist and then sea grass.
Embedded in the sea grass are razor fish which are like a mussel on
steroids that stick out of the sand but the edge is razor sharp (hence
the name) and could easlily slice you open something horrible if you
stepped on it..
We stayed a week at Pt Lincoln NP which was a good
base but as the weather was lousy there is not much to say about it. We
had one exciting day when we decided to tackle a 4WD track. All sand to
Sleaford Mere. We did the right things and lowered our tyre pressue to
22 Should have been 17 and headed down this track that had 10ft poles
sticking out of the sand to mark the way. We took 5 goes before we even
got up the first sand dune and Lesley was having Kinitchkens not too
quietly. The adrennaline was pumping let me tell you. We made it to
pole 85 but to be honest we started at the other end at 87.
I have taken up fishing and at Pt Lincoln I caught a brown one and a silver one.
There
were no showers at Pt Lincoln NP so when we got back into town we
bought a pump and have set up a solar shower. Thought I may catch more
fish if I smelt better than they do. But it hasn't worked yet
Coffin
Bay was a different story the camping at the NP was less than
exciting so we stayed at the town CP. Almost the whole of the NP is by
4 WD access but as we are now experienced had no trouble
driving over the sand dunes and on the beaches. Even Lesley had a go
and it was my turn to have heart palpatations. It was quite sad to see
the efforts the National Parks people and a number of community groups
(including the 4 WD club) make to restore the park to what it should
look like after the farmers had finished with it. See before and after
photo. After 11 years the landscape still looks like a lunar lanscape
The scenery around the edge of the park was glorious however and, had
we been game enough to take our camper trailer in with us, we could
have had some great camping spots.
